BMW Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are a small but a very important part in your engine that allows your vehicle to run. Spark plugs use electricity to create a (you guessed it) spark that starts the combustion process in your engine.

Why do spark plugs need to be checked/replaced?

OEM spark plugs

The performance of your spark plugs is related to the performance of your engine. It is important that you keep your spark plugs working and replace them as recommended to make sure your vehicle is running properly.

Over time spark plugs will age and can cause problems if not replaced. There are a number of things that can affect your spark plugs (oil build-up, engine overheating, wear and tear, etc.). By regularly bringing your vehicle to a trusted shop issues can be identified and prevented.

How much does it cost?

The average cost for a BMW spark plug replacement will depend on the make and model of your vehicle. Prices can start at $330.

Does it matter what brand you use?

Yes, we recommend OEM

The brand matters when it comes to your vehicle performance and how long the spark plugs will last. All spark plugs are not made the same, and it’s very important that you have a good brand installed and that they are installed correctly. Even though they are small, the quality of the spark plugs in your BMW has a lot to do with the performance of your car. At SL Autoworks we use OEM, which is the highest quality and most recommended brand for BMW vehicles.

How often do my spark plugs need to be replaced?

As a general rule, we recommend replacing them every 30,000 miles, but the actual answer will vary based on your specific vehicle model. You can look at your owner’s manual for this information or contact us with your make and model and we will let you know.

Things to watch out for

If you are having trouble starting your car, experiencing slow acceleration, an increase in fuel consumption, or engine misfires your spark plugs could be the culprit. As with any vehicle problem, it is much better to identify and fix it early than “wait and see”. If you aren’t sure if you need to bring your car in yet, give us a call and we will answer any questions you may have.
