What does a clutch do?

The clutch separates your engine from your wheels. This allows you to change gears and to stop your vehicle while the engine is running.

The clutch has three main parts, the clutch plate, the flywheel, and the pressure plate. When you have your foot off the pedal, the clutch is engaged. The three parts are pressed together allowing the engine and transmission to spin at the same speed. When you have your foot on the pedal the pressure plate is pulled away from the clutch plate, so the engine and transmission spin at different speeds, allowing you to change gears.

4 Signs your clutch needs to be replaced

Clutch repairs are not uncommon in BMW’s. There are some specific warning signs you can look out for when the clutch begins to fail. You may need a clutch replacement if you are experiencing any of the following issues:

1. Spongy, sticking, vibrating, or loose clutch pedal when pressed

One of the most obvious signs of a clutch issue is a change in the elasticity of the clutch pedal. You’ll notice more give and take in the flexibility of your pedal. When the pedal gives too easily, starts to stick, or if you are feeling vibrations through it, it’s time to take it to a trusted BMW specialist.

2. Squeaking or grumbling noise when pressed

If you start hearing new noises when you press down on your clutch pedal, your clutch might be deteriorating.

3. Ability to rev the engine, but poor acceleration

If you rev the engine but notice concerningly low acceleration, you may have an issue with your clutch.

4. Difficulty shifting gear

A faulty clutch will greatly impact your transmission and its performance. The most common gear shifting problems are hesitation and gear slipping. This is the most noticeable when you accelerate.
